Have you ever felt uncomfortable when a coworker, even one you’re pretty good friends with at work asks to follow you on Instagram, to be friends on Facebook, or wants to watch your TikTok videos?

@Careersbykirstie on TikTok has some great advice on dealing with social media and friends at work.

Don’t feel obligated just because a coworker asked you for your social media handles

  1. Don’t feel obligated to connect with your coworkers with your personal social media profiles.
  2. If you don’t feel comfortable saying “no” then give them your LinkedIn page.

I think this is a great career tip! LinkedIn is literally the professional alternative to connecting with coworkers on social media. It’s still giving them access to you, just not your personal life.

I use a rule of thumb when adding friends on Facebook (and I do everything in my power to prevent people in real life from finding me on TikTok): If I wouldn’t give them a key to my house, or eat lunch with them on a Saturday, then it’s a hard no.
