Try “if”firmations if affirmations feel weird

Alternatives to Affirmations - Iffirmations

If you don’t enjoy affirmations, give iffirmations a try. Chrstine Gibson shared the idea, and I love it.

How to try it out:

Step 1: Try some regular affirmations and notice how it feels in your body.

Step 2: Add “What if” to each affirmation and notice how it feels in your body.

Does one feel better for you? If so, go with that one!

My Experience of Affirmations vs. Iffirmations

Iffirmations - Slob Mom Rehab

Step 1: I said the following affirmations:

  • I am focused
  • I am a calm mom
  • I am good to myself

Step 2: Then I tried the following iffirmations by adding “What if” in front of the same affirmations:

  • What if I am focused?
  • What if I am a calm mom?
  • What if I am good to myself?

Initial Result
The iffirmations felt better.

For me, affirmations always feel like I’m lying to myself, even though I (think) I know the science behind them, and I know they work for a lot of people. It just feels…off for me. However, when I add the “What if” in front, it feels hopeful, exciting and achievable. I enjoy a good challenge. What IF I am focused today? Asking that question to myself makes my brain go, “Oh… well, let’s see… to make that happen, we need you to clear the desk, sit up and pick a task. Let’s go! We can do this!”

Bottom line: Iffirmations felt better for me, so if I’m going to use affirmations, I going with the Iffirmations.

Will I continue? I will add to the toolbox and see how it goes!
